Study Progress of Pore Structure of C/C Composites

Release time: 2019-08-14

Porous structure is a key component in C/C composites. It will directly affect the fatigue behavior of C/C(Carbon/Carbon) Composite. Hence, it is necessary to study the evolution of porous structure in C/C composites under the fatigue loading. In this text, we summarize the character of porous structure in original C/C composites, and analyze the evolution of porous structure after fatigue loading. The positive effect of the porous structure evolution after fatigue loading on the reinforcing behavior of fatigue is proposed as well. It offers a basis for further studies on the fatigue mechanisms of C/C composites.

As a key element of C/C composites, pores directly affect the densification process and mechanical, oxidation, ablation performance of C/C composites, and make the C/C composite qualify with many potential functions. Carbon matrix is continuously filled with pores in carbon fiber preform. This process is known as densification process of C/C composites. According to the preparation principle and process of C/C composites, C/C composites often need several successive thermal decomposition cycles of hydrocarbon gas, or multiple impregnated carbonization cycles of liquid phase precursors like resin and asphalt.

We studied four aspects, including the formation of pores, characterization of pores, impact of pores on the densification process and properties. It shows that the oxidation is mastered by the specific surface areas rather than by the open porosity or the densification degree of sample or the amount of pore entrance. The oxidation happens preferentially at the fiber matrix interface and pyrocarbon interface, and then progress along the micro-cracks between the interfaces .
