We have known that graphite felt can be used as electrode materials in Vanadium Redox Flow Battery. In the current situation, all vanadium redox flow batteries(VFB) are the most mature and widely used electrochemical energy storage batteries. For the purpose of accelerating the industrialization progress, the main material electrode of battery was briefly studied in this text. We make brief description of the requirements of the electrode materials for the liquid flow battery, review the classification of the electrode materials, compare the advantages and disadvantages of various electrode material, analyze the application prospects of the various electrode materials, mainly introduce the modification methods of the graphite felt electrode materials, and prospect the development trend of the graphite felt electrode materials.
We studied the surface treatment of graphite felt by ammoniation and surface modification using gallium, cerium and tin oxide. We find that the surface morphology and electrochemical properties of the modified graphite felt were characterized by scanning electron microscope, infrared spectrometer and X-ray diffraction instrument. Further more, the results display that the surface of the modified graphite felt is uniform, the electrochemical activity is enhanced. Graphite felt modified with tin oxide will have the best electrochemical activity.
In order to study the effects of PAN graphite felt electrode by acid or thermal treatment on the discharge performance and AC impedance of all vanadium redox flow battery. On the one hand, We make the graphite felt samples under different acid and thermal conditions. On the other hand, we test the samples of graphite felt electrode with acid or thermal treatment by cyclic voltammetry and SEM. In the end, we assemble the treated graphite felt electrode into a vanadium redox flow battery for performance test with the equivalent circuit method to analyze the AC impedance. It shows that both of acid and thermal treatment can improve the battery performance, reduce the Faraday resistance, and promote electrochemical reaction.
