Graphite electrode plays an indispensable role in iron and steel smelting, electrolytic aluminum, ferroalloy, calcium carbide, industrial silicon, yellow phosphorus smelting and other high temperature manufacturing fields because of its irreplaceable performance advantages. Because the raw material of graphite electrode comes from tail slag in petrochemical industry and coal chemical industry. Graphite electrode is made by deep processing in more than ten processes. And it also conforms with the national circular economy industrial policy. With the policy adjustment of the metallurgical industry and the normalization of environmental protection policies, the demand for graphite electrodes will continue increasing. But expansion of production capacity will inhibit the rising of demands. The increasing output of EAF steel leads to a large increase in the demand for UHP graphite electrode and its raw material needle coke. By putting into production, reproducing or increasing production, the domestic and foreign needle coke manufacturers meet the market demand. Six kinds of needle cokes are made into graphite electrodes respectively under the same condition,  but their performance is different. We have compared and analyzed their performances, and evaluated their properties. The corresponding measures are put forward for the rational use of these needle coke．

Here, we’d also introduce the development of graphite electrode EDM machine. We’ll introduce the main types and basic performances of the main EDM machines abroad. For example, by means of the EDM machine tool with high speed graphite electrode driven by Sodicks Ad30ls linear motor, we can produce 70 mm deep SKD11 die steel cavity by a tip of 1*38mm 1 degree angle graphite electrode. After processing, the surface roughness is Rz 10μm. It can provide a basis for machine tool selection for graphite electrode discharge machining.
