As a strategic non-metallic mineral resource, graphite has the excellent features of radiation resistance, electrical and thermal conductivity, corrosion resistance and high and low temperature resistance. Flake graphite has been widely used in metallurgy, automobile, atomic energy, chemical industry, defense, nuclear power and aerospace fields. The purity of graphite has main influence on the performance and application of graphite products. Though Chinese fixed carbon content in graphite is low, we need fixed carbon content of graphite in more than 99% in high-tech industries, thus, the purification of graphite requirements are more and more higher.
As for large flake graphite’s superior physical and chemical properties, it has been widely used in many fields. Because large scale flake tends to be easily destroyed in processing, we also concern about the recent progress in beneficiation technologies for protecting large flake graphite from two aspects: grinding media or machine and flotation process. We analyzed the problems existing in the current flotation process in detail, and put forward the direction of further study.
We reviewed the purification of flake graphite and its industrial application, and also disscussed the principles, advantages and disadvantages of flotation, alkali acid, hydrofluoric acid, chlorination and high temperature purification. Here we’d like to point out the technology of grinding-flotations are used as raw materials for pretreatment. The follow-up selection of non- toxic environmental protection agents, and low energy-efficient equipment for further purification of flake graphite are also the development direction of high purity.
