Graphite materials are widely used in discharge processing because of their high thermal stability, moderate density, high strength and uniform micro-crystal structure. Especially in EDM cavity die, it is selected as a main electrode material. The sorts of graphite electrode material was stated and introduced. The characteristics and choice method and application example of graphite electrode in EDM machining will also explained in the future.
Here we’d like to emphasize and review the properties of the graphite and physical characteristics of the special graphite material for electric discharge machining(EDM). Different physical characteristics of EDM graphite materials have different influences on the effect of the discharge machining process. Graphite material and metal steel have different requirements on the pulse parameters and their discharge characteristics.
With the rapid development of EDM technology, the research and development of EDM graphite material is being actively moving. Since the 1970s, China has made good achievements in this research work. And more than a dozen kinds of EDM graphite electrodes have been produced. As far as we know, these products are basically the same and belong to the general type of graphite electrode material. There were no systems or series for the types of graphite electrode material. Another problem is the matching problem of product selection. According to the different technological requirements of EDM, different materials of work-piece should be selected with the corresponding type of graphite electrode to achieve the best state of machining.
