Analysis of Graphite Seal Ring

Graphite seal ring is the most advanced form of mechanical seal, and it is also one of the key parts in mechanical seal. The processing quality of graphite seal ring directly affects the sealing performance of the main engine, as well as the performance and safety of the mechanical seal. The turning of graphite seal ring is the key process of graphite seal ring machining. The quality of turning directly affects the sealing performance of aero-engine. In the past, the turning quality of graphite seal ring was very unstable. The main influencing factors of graphite seal ring, such as turning method, process route and processing parameters, are analyzed. In order to improve the qualified rate of turning graphite seal ring and reduce the turning cost, we have carried out a series of analyses to solve the difficulties in the turning of graphite seal ring.

 

Here we give an example to illustrate some problems in the application of graphite sealing ring. For example, when the engine is tested for secondary assembly, we find that the graphite seal ring in the combustion chamber of the engine breaks down. The fault parts are analyzed by means of appearance inspection, fracture observation, physical performance testing and size measurement. We also analyze the possible causes of the fracture of graphite seal ring. The results show that the physical properties and structural design of the failed graphite sealing ring meet the requirements. However the impact resistance of graphite seal ring will be very poor because of its brittle quality. Therefore, when the engine vibrates, it will cause rotor impact graphite seal ring and dry friction of dynamic and static components. At the same time, the brittle fracture of graphite seal ring occurs under the impact of shaft.
