China is rich in coke production resources, coal tar is the by-product of coke. Coal tar pitch is rich in carbon and low in price. Coal tar pitch is an irreplaceable raw material in the production of various carbon materials at present.

Coal tar pitch is a new composition after coal tar cutting (boiling point > 360 ℃), which is complex and unsuitable for processing and utilization. Improving the added value of asphalt products is a direction of coal tar processing. We have discussed the characteristics, existing problems and development trend of coal tar pitch processing technology. We also describe the application of coal tar pitch in direct combustion, fuel oil, isostatic graphite, carbon fiber and so on.

Coal tar pitch which accounts for more than 55% of coal tar distillation products, however, has not been effectively utilized. Chinese coal tar pitch is facing with the low level processing technology and low added value. How to improve the economic value of asphalt products is very important. Improving the deep processing technology of coal tar pitch is one of the effective ways to improve the added value of coal tar pitch.
