Why can Carbon Fiber be Used as Insulation Material?

Release time: 2020-01-20

There are three ways of heat transfer: heat transfer, heat convection, and heat radiation.

Heat transfer is the contact of different temperature objects, and then heat is transferred from high temperature objects to low temperature objects.

Thermal convection is the transfer of heat through fluid flow.

Thermal radiation is the transfer of heat through radiation waves from one object to another.

The carbon fiber is made into a felt by acupuncture and becomes a loose porous carbon fiber polymer. Carbon fibers maintain felt shape by friction. The point-to-point contact between the fibers, and then lapping together greatly reduce the heat transfer through the solid heat transfer. When the temperature is higher than 800°C, with the increasing of radiation intensity, thermal radiation becomes the main form of heat transfer. The radiation wave is reflected constantly through the carbon fiber, and then the radiation wave dissipates inside the felt. Thus the carbon fiber achieves the function of heat insulation.
