The lining of many metallurgical furnaces, such as the bottom of the furnace, the cylinder and bosh of iron furnace, the lining of ferroalloy furnace and calcium-carbide furnace, and the bottom and side of aluminum electrolytic tank, can be built of carbon or graphite blocks.

Because the graphite is quickly etched in the high temperatures of the oxidation atmosphere, the graphite products used as refractory materials should not generally be used in the oxidation atmosphere.
