Features of the Mechanical Processing of Graphite Materials

The organizational structure of the graphite material is formed by the carbon solid aggregate particles and powder raw materials prepared through a series of production procedures, so its cutting is composed of a certain number of particles and dust.

 

Carbon material is an inhomogeneous brittle material whose hardness fluctuates over a considerable range. The hardness of roasted charcoal products is large, which leads to relatively difficult processing. Graphite products have relatively small hardness and are relatively easy to be cut.

 

Cutting carbon material will produce certain impact and vibration, and because the surface of graphite products contains silicon carbide, the high speed steel or cemented carbide tool with high hardness and good impact vibration resistance is needed. Cutting carbon material produces certain cutting heat, but coolant or lubricant is not required on the processing surface.

 

Although graphite material is a brittle material with low hardness, the wear on the blade at low speed cutting is more serious than cutting cast iron, so cutting graphite material is suitable for high speed cutting.

 

Processing graphite materials also often use multi-knife, multi-edge cutting, milling technology. Carbon material is processed in bulk and of similar shape and size, so special fixtures and measuring tools should be provided.
