Why should the graphite crucible be lined with a layer of refractory clay?

In smelting, graphite has a reducing effect on copper and lead oxides, which is not conducive to the slag making process. Slag melting agent and oxidant have strong corrosive effect on graphite crucible.

If clay is not lined in a graphite crucible, a crucible will be damaged in only 2 to 3 times.
