The type of reactive gas (gas source) is crucial to the manufacture of CFC by FCVI process.

The criteria for selecting the gas source are penetration time, porosity of CFC, and uniformity of densification. The most suitable gas source should be able to manufacture a uniformly dense CFC in the shortest possible time.

Since the CFC preform affects the temperature distribution, the selection of the type of preforms is crucial for the selection of different reactive gas sources. In general, the temperature of the preform must be high enough to allow the pyrolysis gas source to deposit solid carbon and then effectively densify the CFC.
