Although the carbon fiber is a brittle material, the CFC presents a relatively high fracture toughness.
The main reason for the above phenomenon is that the fracture stress of the CFC is much lower than that of carbon fibers.
When the interface binding of the CFC matrix carbon and the carbon fiber is relatively weak, the stress will cause the matrix to crack through the carbon fiber, but the crack does not pass through the carbon fiber. The carbon fiber can still continue to bear the load, thus showing a non-brittle fracture mode. We usually refer to this phenomenon as a pseudoplastic fracture.
