Improving the Performance of CFC by Treating the Surface of the Carbon Fiber

Surface treatment of the carbon fiber is also an improvement of the carbon fiber preform, and the CFC with improved performance can also be obtained using the method.

 

By analyzing several common treating methods for surface modification of carbon fiber, we find that the mechanical properties such as flexural strength, flexural modulus, interface shear strength and interlaminar shear strength of CFC made by Vapour Phase Oxidation Process are effectively improved.

 

The surface of the treated carbon fiber is etched by the oxidant, resulting in the increase of its specific surface area, and thus favors the adhesion of the carbon fiber and the matrix materials. It also improves the mechanical properties of the CFC.
