The defects of amorphous carbon provide a channel for the rapid diffusion of oxygen, so that the oxidation process occurs preferently in the matrix of CFC. The degree of graphitization of carbon matrix is worse than that of carbon fiber, and amorphous carbon is easier to oxidize than graphite carbon.
In an oxidizing environment, oxygen in the medium is first adsorbed on the surface of the CFC.
The oxidation reaction gradually diffuses through the void of the CFC and takes the defect of the material as the active center. After that, the oxidation reaction successively occurs in the interlayer of the oxidized carbon matrix, the heterogeneous carbon matrix, the homogeneous carbon matrix, the axial surface of the carbon fiber, end of the fiber, and finally the core of the fiber. Under the catalysis of the impurity particles, the oxidation reaction occurs, and the CO and CO2 gases are generated to desorption from the surface of the CFC.
