Thermochemical ablation refers to the oxidation and sublimation of the CFC surface in high temperature atmosphere.

In a high temperature environment, oxidizing atmosphere such as O₂, H₂O and CO₂ will react with carbon to form gaseous products, which will consume carbon on the surface of materials and cause mass loss of materials.

Similar to the oxidation of CFC in high temperature environment, the rate of carbon consumption is controlled by the rate of carbon oxidation or the diffusion rate of carbon material in the oxidizing component.
