SiO₂ is considered to be an ideal oxygen diffusion barrier material for CFC.

However, due to the low bonding strength between SiO₂ and CFC, it cannot be used as coating material directly.

Usually through the oxidation of ceramic coatings such as SIC, a dense SiO₂ film is obtained on the surface of the coating of CFC, thus preventing the diffusion of oxygen.
