The coating and the matrix of CFC are well bonded and the coefficient of thermal expansion matches.

When CFC are subjected to thermal shock during service, the thermal mismatch between coating and substrate will cause great thermal stress.

If the interfacial bonding between coating and CFC matrix is weak or the difference of thermal expansion coefficient is too large, the coating is easy to crack or even spalling.
