There is a significant difference in the CTE(coefficient of thermal expansion) between the HfC coating and CFC.

The CTE for the two materials are a_Hfc≈6.73x10^-6/K and a_CFC≈1.0x10^-6/K, so it is not feasible to directly apply the HfC coating onto the surface of CFC.

Otherwise, it could easily lead to cracking and spalling of the coating for CFC.
