During service CFC is exposed to extreme thermomechanical environments characterized by ultra-high temperatures, high-velocity erosive flows, high-frequency mechanical vibration and rapid thermal transients.

Consequently, protective coatings on CFC substrates are susceptible to cracking, spallation and ablative loss.
