Precursor gases undergo pre-pyrolysis reactions on or near the surface of the CFC preform, yielding aromatic hydrocarbon macromolecules that reduce the diffusion coefficient.

Diffusion thereby becomes the predominant rate-controlling step in the densification process of CFC.
